At Home Remedy For Muscle Tension
What’s with everyone foam rolling these days? First, what is a foam roller anyway? A foam roller is a dense yet lightweight foam cylinder that can be used to soften tight muscles. They are inexpensive and accessible. They allow you to work with your muscle tension at home and on your schedule with more frequency than most people can get to bodywork appointments. They are a wonderful way to enhance, support, and get you through between your chiropractic and massage sessions.
The density and the shape of these tools allow you to apply pressure to sore muscles and stretch tight fascia. Simply place the roller on the ground or against a wall. Then you can lean up against or lie the sore muscle on the roller. From this position, you can roll back and forth over the affected area, which will massage and stretch the muscle and fascia. This has the effect of softening a tight area as well as bringing fresh blood and circulation to the region – all of which relieves pain and increases healing. Even if you don’t have a specific injury, foam rolling is a wonderful health maintenance tool that can be effective for keeping your body in top shape for an active lifestyle.
In addition to maintaining a healthy musculoskeletal system, regular foam rolling is incredibly helpful in promoting mind/body awareness. The roller effectively brings attention to a targeted area. You begin to feel all the ligaments, smaller muscle groups, attachments, and fascial connections going on that might otherwise escape your notice. Not only does regular rolling affect the muscles themselves, but the increased awareness of your body’s tensions allows you to work more specifically with those areas. Knowing your body in more detail inspires you to make adjustments to unconscious holding patterns that may be perpetuating less optimal functioning. Plus, spending a few minutes every day to pay attention to your body and actively release built-up tensions is mentally and emotionally beneficial as well.
Some tips about using your foam roller:

Foam rollers are best utilized on the belly of the muscle. Stay away from rolling over bony prominences or your abdomen.
